PERFORMANCE, NOT GUESSWORK

A professionally installed sound system is only as good as its final calibration—and the acoustic environment in which it operates.

At Epic AVIT, we believe commissioning is one of the purest expressions of audio engineering. It's where science, experience, and precision come together to extract the best possible performance from your investment.

Whether Epic designed your system or another contractor installed it, our independent commissioning services are designed to optimize the equipment you already own.

We don't guess. We measure, analyze, optimize, and prove the results.

A CLOSER LOOK

See what
you’re hearing.

A response plot helps reveal how sound varies with frequency. Phase analysis adds another view of how sources and the room interact.

Readings become useful evidence when the measurement method, listening positions and system settings are documented together.

Every Room Has an Acoustic Signature

Before making adjustments to your sound system, we evaluate the acoustical characteristics of the space itself.

Fitness facilities present particularly challenging environments. Large reflective surfaces, exposed ceilings, concrete walls, mirrors, hard flooring, and expansive open spaces can dramatically affect sound quality.

These environments can produce:

  • Excessive reverberation: Sound continues reflecting throughout the room, reducing clarity and intelligibility.
  • Standing waves and room resonances: Certain frequencies become exaggerated or suppressed in different locations.
  • Phase cancellation and comb filtering: Interactions between sound sources and reflections create uneven frequency response.
  • Flutter echo: Repeated reflections between parallel surfaces create distracting, audible echoes.
  • Uneven bass response: Low frequencies accumulate in some areas while disappearing in others.
  • Poor speech intelligibility: Instructors and announcements become difficult to understand, particularly at elevated background noise levels.
  • Long acoustic decay times: Music loses definition as reflected energy persists throughout the room.

Using calibrated measurement microphones and professional acoustic analysis software, including Room EQ Wizard (REW), Epic documents these conditions before electronic optimization begins.

Because there's an important distinction between a sound system that needs adjustment and a room that needs acoustic treatment.

Digital signal processing can accomplish remarkable things. But it cannot repeal the laws of physics.

Independent Audio System Commissioning

The equipment may already be installed. The engineering isn't necessarily finished.

Epic provides independent commissioning and optimization of existing commercial audio systems, including installations performed by other contractors.

Our evaluation is manufacturer-independent. We evaluate the installed system on its technical merits rather than promoting a particular equipment brand.

Our commissioning process includes:

  1. Baseline performance measurements — Documenting existing system performance before adjustments.
  2. Loudspeaker polarity and time alignment — Verifying correct operation and coordinating arrival times between loudspeakers where appropriate.
  3. Gain structure and SPL calibration — Establishing consistent, predictable volume levels throughout the facility.
  4. Crossover and subwoofer integration — Optimizing frequency transitions, phase relationships, and system integration.
  5. Frequency-response analysis — Identifying peaks, nulls, and response irregularities across representative listening positions.
  6. Precision equalization — Applying measured, targeted corrections to improve tonal balance and consistency.
  7. System protection and verification — Reviewing appropriate limiting, amplifier operation, and performance at intended operating levels.
  8. Final performance documentation — Repeating measurements and recording the results.

Our objective is not simply to make the system sound better.

Our objective is to make it sound as good as the installed equipment and physical environment will allow.

Hear the Difference. See the Proof.

We believe engineering results should be demonstrable.

Before commissioning, Epic preserves the existing system configuration wherever possible and establishes a measurable performance baseline.

Following optimization, we repeat the applicable tests under comparable conditions to document what has changed.

Where the equipment supports it, we can demonstrate the difference by switching between the original configuration and the newly commissioned settings.

Clients receive a documented comparison of the system before and after commissioning, supported by relevant measurements, graphs, and engineering observations.

No vague promises. No mystery adjustments.

Documented results. Clear recommendations.

When the Room Is the Problem

Acoustical Treatment Consulting

Even the finest audio equipment cannot completely overcome a poorly behaved acoustic environment.

When our measurements identify physical room-acoustic limitations, Epic can develop recommendations for acoustical treatment rather than attempting to solve every problem electronically.

Our consulting process can include:

  • Room-acoustic surveys and baseline documentation
  • Reverberation and decay-time analysis
  • Identification of problematic reflective surfaces
  • Room dimensions, surface materials, and photographic documentation
  • Coordination of treatment recommendations and product selection
  • Post-installation measurements to verify improvements

Our goal is to connect acoustic diagnosis with practical treatment solutions.

Before and After: Acoustical Treatment Verification

When acoustical treatment is recommended, Epic can document the room's original acoustic performance before materials are installed.

Following installation, we return to perform comparable measurements using the same methodology and measurement locations.

This allows the client to evaluate the actual impact of the treatment, including measurable changes in reverberation, frequency-dependent decay, and other relevant acoustic characteristics.

Instead of simply installing acoustic panels and hoping for the best, we provide a documented basis for evaluating their effectiveness.

We measure the problem. We help engineer the solution. Then we measure the result.
